We were missionaries with a spreadsheet problem.
How it began
The tool we wished we'd had
Better Portion began inside missionary life, not outside it. Raising support, tracking donors on spreadsheets, watching gifted people spend their evenings fighting tools that were never designed for ministry. That was the starting point.
The conviction was simple: Christian missionaries and the organizations that send them shouldn't have to choose between meaningful mission work and manageable operations. So we started building the systems we wished we'd had, first for ourselves and the ministries around us, then for anyone carrying the same weight.
The name
Why "Better Portion"
In Luke's Gospel, Martha is anxious and distracted by many things while her sister Mary sits at the feet of Jesus. And Jesus says: Mary has chosen the better portion, and it will not be taken from her.
Software is Martha's work: necessary, easy to drown in, never the point. We build it so that missionaries can hand the anxious work to a system and keep their attention where Mary kept hers: on the Person in front of them.
That's the test every feature has to pass. Does this give someone more room for the better portion? If not, we don't build it.
